DKNY was founded in 1989 by Donna Karan. She began the line after trying to find clothing for her daughter, Gabby. She had in mind a collection of diverse, urban clothing that could be affordable while being stylish at the same time. Karan grew up in the fashion world around her father who was a tailor and her mother who was a model. She began designing clothing in high school then went on to Parson's School of Design where she was hired by designer Anne Klein. When Klein passed away, Karan became her successor. After 10 years designing Anne Klein, Karan launched her first New York collection. As her styles took over the fashion world, her labels spread throughout the world as well. Not only did she produce jeans and clothing, but in 1999 DKNY lingerie hit the scene with a bang.

DKNY is designed with the idea that women never know where the day will take them. Standing for Donna Karan New York, the brand claims to be the energy of New York itself. It models its styles after the modern woman, combining easy, casual, stylish and creative attire. DKNY designs lingerie, including bras and panties, to fit all of these styles. Like designer Donna Karan's other fashions, she wants to offer women comfort and style to embody the everyday woman facing an unpredictable day.

For Karan DKNY represents a sensual expression and sense of security for each body. These collections range from sporty, cotton styles of panties and bras to tailored couture styles of bras. The luxe Belle du Jour collection offers women a sexy feel as well. These styles can be seen in magazines around the world as well as on some of the hottest celebrities like Ashley Green, Elizabeth Hurley and Liv Tyler.

Karan is well loved in the world of fashion. The Council of Fashion Designers of America has saluted Donna Karan for her styles six times. She was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the CFDA in 2004. Karan also won the Council of Fashion Designers of America Award in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1992 and 1996.

She has received many other fashion awards as well. Karan along with her DKNY brand support many charities. She is the founder of Urban Zen which is the culmination of her philanthropic efforts. Karan says the initiative is to create a working structure for advancing wellness and preserving culture. Karan also co-chairs the annual New York "Kids for Kids" events for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation. DKNY also sells shirts on the website where all proceeds go to one of five charities in New York.

DKNY is the spirit and comfort of New York. It offers women the ability to be unique while looking and feeling great. Not knowing where the day will take you is the beauty of being a woman wearing the spirit of New York.

Donna Karan's quest for the perfect jeans, as well as her desire to dress her daughter Gabby, resulted in the 1989 birth of DKNY. Fast fashion with an urban mind-set, DKNY is what Karan calls "the pizza to Collection's caviar." DKNY grew so popular and diverse that other brands and labels spun from it, including DKNY Jeans, pure, DKNY Active, DKNY Underwear, DKNY Juniors, DKNY Kids, and DKNY Baby (Not surprisingly, Karan's grandkids and friends' kids had much to do with the latter brands). Like Collection, DKNY has myriad accessory lines to underscore its New York City street-smart look. Karan saw that the many men in her life, starting with her husband, also needed a sophisticated system of dressing. Considering Karan's father was a custom tailor, a menswear collection was inevitable, and it was founded in 1992. Since men cannot live by doubleface cashmere suits alone, DKNY Men emerged a year later in answer to his casual, sport side. Both menswear lines beget other collections, from tailored suits to underwear.
