About the Company

In 1932, Jacques Levine's founder, Falk Levine, opened a shoe factory in Middletown, NY. He wanted to broaden the limited selection of footwear available to women in the 1920s, a time of excitement and new fashions in America. While opening a business during the Depression was risky, the company prospered, never veering from Levine's determination to offer only the finest quality, styles, and value in the market.

Levine's, under Falk's leadership, was one of America's first companies to produce sandals for women, a departure from the usual closed-toed shoes women had worn for centuries. The company 's popularity had another surge in the mid-'30s when Levine created the backless slipper, which Falk Levine called a mule, an adaptation of the French word for slippers, mulette. A decade later, evening shoes entered the company's collection when Jacques Levine joined his father in the business. This ushered in a new era of business expansion following WWII. And by the late 1940s, the Jacques Levine brand made its first appearance.

In 1969 Jacques started the import side of the business, and created the now world famous soft, kidskin slippers from Spain, an item that gained immediate popularity with women. Two years later, Jacques coaxed his son Harold to join the company, representing the third generation in the family's respected shoe business. Following Harold's entry into the company, the Jacques Levine brand expanded to include casual shoes and espadrilles.

Every aspect of the company's growth has produced a group of loyal new customers. Jacques Levine, now celebrating 75 years of business success, continues to maintain its high standards in design, materials and workmanship.

All through our history we have recognized the responsibility we have to you, the consumer, to provide the best possible merchandise. We realize we must continue to create footwear that looks and feels great. This is an ongoing and exciting challenge. Harold Levine
