The company was founded in 1902 in Alexander City, Alabama, the same year of the great fire that destroyed most of the town. It was tough going in "Alex Town" with lost resources and largely being isolated with no bus or rail service, but Benjamin Russell, the company's founder, rallied the town and helped in its development. By 1932, Russell was manufacturing athletic garments for football, baseball and basketball just as sports were taking hold of America's attention. It was around this time that Russell created one of the world's most beloved pieces of sportswear, the sweatshirt, at the suggestion of his son as a substitute for the uncomfortable wool jerseys he and other football players wore as standard uniforms at the time. This began Russell's longstanding affiliation with college sports that endures to this day. The Russell "R" logo is just as recognizable to the eyes of NCAA fans as the Penn Stripe or Carolina blue. In the 1960's Russell Athletic would go on to become the largest manufacturer of athletic uniforms and apparel in the US. Russell was acquired by Berkshire Hathaway in 2006 and joined Fruit of the Loom in the Berkshire Hathaway galaxy.
